Atlantic County Inmate Search: No Online Roster
Atlantic County does not publish an official public, searchable jail roster. No online booking database, mugshot gallery, or inmate listing was located in the official county sources. The Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility houses pretrial detainees, county-sentenced inmates, and in some cases state-sentenced inmates awaiting transfer, but that population is not listed in a publicly accessible web portal. This is different from counties in some other states where sheriffs post a daily roster online.
What that means in practice: you cannot look up an Atlantic County jail inmate by name on a website the way you might check a court docket. Custody confirmation requires a direct call to the jail records line or to the facility itself. The county's own pages route custody questions to phone contacts, and those contacts are listed further down. VINELink can help with notifications and status updates when Atlantic County data is available in that system, but it should not be treated as a substitute for calling the jail when accuracy matters.
It is also worth noting what this page does not cover. The New Jersey Department of Corrections search handles state-prison inmates, not county jail detainees. The Bureau of Prisons handles federal inmates. Each system is separate, and a county jail booking will not show up in an NJDOC or BOP search unless the person has been transferred to state or federal custody. If you are not sure which system to use, start by calling the Atlantic County Jail Records line at 609-909-7551.
How to Check Atlantic County Custody
There are five paths to follow depending on custody type. County jail questions go by phone. State and federal inmates use online search tools. VINELink adds a notification layer on top of what the phone can tell you. Work through the steps below in order if you are unsure where the person is held.
- Call Jail Records. The Atlantic County Central Municipal Court page lists the Atlantic County Jail Records line at 609-909-7551. This is the first call for county jail custody questions.
- Call the facility directly. The Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility main line is 609-645-5855. Staff can confirm whether someone is held there and provide mail format information.
- Use VINELink for notifications. VINELink provides custody status and release notifications for participating agencies in New Jersey. You can register for alerts by phone, email, text, or app so you receive a notice when custody status changes.
- Search NJDOC for state inmates. If the person may be in a New Jersey state prison rather than a county jail, use the NJDOC Incarcerated Person Search. This system covers people in state custody, not county detention.
- Search BOP for federal inmates. The Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator covers people in federal custody. Atlantic County federal criminal matters are handled through the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Camden vicinage.
Note: A person may move between county, state, and federal custody during the same case. Pretrial detainees can be released after bond, transferred, or sentenced to state prison within the same week. Confirm current custody before acting on any result.
NJDOC Inmate Search: Fields and Options
Because Atlantic County has no public online roster, the New Jersey Department of Corrections search is the closest available name-based lookup tool for the state system. It covers people in NJDOC custody, not county jail bookings. The table below shows what the portal accepts so you can prepare before searching.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBI Number | Text | Optional | State Bureau of Identification number; speeds up exact-match searches. |
| First Name | Text | Optional/conditional | Use with last name for a name search. |
| Middle Initial | Text | Optional | Helps narrow common names. |
| Last Name | Text | Optional/conditional | Required for a name search. |
| Gender / Sex | Dropdown | Optional | Demographic filter available in portal. |
| Race | Dropdown | Optional | Demographic filter available in portal. |
| Facility | Dropdown | Optional | Filter by current NJDOC facility if known. |
| Search | Button | Yes | Runs search after accepting disclaimer. |
The NJDOC help page notes that offenders are removed from the search results one year after the completion of their custodial term, the maximum sentence expiration date, or the mandatory parole supervision date. A person who completed a state sentence more than a year ago will not appear even if they were once in NJDOC custody.
What Atlantic County Inmate Records Show
Because no official Atlantic County jail roster exists, the fields in this table reflect what can be confirmed or requested through official channels, either by phone, mail format rules, or through the NJDOC system for state custody. This is a conservative list based on the official sources located.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Full Name | Legal name used in booking and case records; needed for phone inquiries and mail. |
| County ID Number | Facility-assigned identifier; include on mail and fund transfers when known. |
| Housing Location | Main Jail Building or Main Jail Annex; needed for mail addressing; obtain from inmate or facility. |
| Custody Status | Whether the person is currently housed at the facility; confirmed by phone through jail records. |
| County of Commitment | For state-prison inmates in NJDOC, shows the county where the person was tried, convicted, and sentenced. |
| Current Facility | For NJDOC inmates, shows the state prison where the person is currently held. |
| Current Max Release Date | For NJDOC inmates, the most recent calculated release date based on earned days and any disciplinary additions. |
The NJDOC help page defines several additional fields that appear on state-prison results: alias, case number, commitment order, and counts (separate crimes for which the person was convicted). Those fields do not appear in county jail phone responses but are part of the NJDOC online profile.
NJDOC Offender Search Pages
The NJDOC offender information page describes the incarcerated person search and what data it provides, including field definitions, removal rules, and tips for searching by name or SBI number.
The offender information page is the starting point before you run a name search; it explains which inmates appear in the system and when records are removed after release.
The NJDOC also maintains a search disclaimer path at inmatefinder that walks users through terms and conditions before the search runs.
Accepting the disclaimer is required before the system returns any results; it confirms that NJDOC data is for informational purposes and should be verified with the agency before relying on it for legal or safety decisions.
Atlantic County Jail Facilities
Atlantic County's main adult detention facility is the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility, which opened in 1985 with a design capacity of 398 beds. The facility grew substantially over the years. The Division of Adult Detention page currently reports an average of about 650 housed inmates across two sections, the Main Jail Building and the Main Jail Annex. A separate Department of Public Safety overview uses a broader 1,000-inmate average along with custody jurisdiction over approximately 250 inmates in community programs; the figures reflect different time periods or counting methods, so the Adult Detention page's 650-inmate current figure is used here as the more specific source. The facility earned 100% compliance in a six-day state inspection in 2024, reviewed across about 30 categories.
The county also operates Harborfields Youth Detention for male juveniles. Harborfields holds up to 20 youth awaiting court review, not adults. Juvenile detention records are not publicly available, so the contacts below are for family communication and administrative inquiries only.

VINELink Custody Notifications
VINELink is a victim notification and custody-status service. It is not a roster, and it does not replace a phone call when precise current custody matters. What it does offer is proactive notification. Once you register, the system sends an alert when custody status changes, such as a release, transfer, or other change for a tracked person. New Jersey participates in VINELink, and the state has published an Enhanced VINE brochure explaining how registration and notification work in NJ.
| Field Label | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| State | Dropdown / map | Select New Jersey to search or register. |
| Name / ID | Text | Search by offender name or ID where supported. |
| Facility / Agency | Dropdown | Select from participating agencies. |
| Custody Status | Result field | Shows custody status where data is available from the agency. |

Atlantic County Booking and Intake
When an arrest results in jail admission in Atlantic County, the person moves from the arresting agency to the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility for intake. The county's inmate services and administration pages describe the operational steps that follow admission: housing assignment, facility ID and county ID number tracking, mail account setup, inmate funds accounting, medical and dental availability, classification, and social-service intake. Because the facility houses pretrial, county-sentenced, and certain state-sentenced inmates, the custody category can shift quickly after an initial court appearance, bond posting, plea, sentencing, transfer, or release decision.
The jail's own Correction Officers Academy, certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission, trains staff on-site. The facility opened the academy in 1997 and graduated its first class in 1998. The New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts incorporated the facility's inmate classification program into the statewide computer system, which is used by associated counties.
Bail is accepted 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. Cash and bond are both accepted. The county does not list credit card or online bond payment as available options. A person may be released after bond posting outside normal business hours, so online results and phone confirmations from earlier in the day may not reflect an evening or overnight release. Verify current custody by phone when the information is time-sensitive.
Atlantic County Jail Visitation Hours
Visitation at the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility is by appointment only and runs on weekends. General population inmates and those in the new commitment or high security categories each have different windows. Call the automated phone system at 609-645-5855 for current scheduling information and to book an appointment. The schedule below reflects the adult facility; Harborfields has separate hours.
| Inmate Category | Days | Hours | By Appointment |
|---|---|---|---|
| General population | Saturday and Sunday | 10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. | Yes |
| New commitment | Saturday and Sunday | 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. | Yes |

All guests and their property entering the Atlantic County Justice Facility are subject to search under N.J.A.C. 10A:18-6.14. Visitors must be 18 or older; minors must stay with a parent or legal guardian. Visitors 14 to 18 must provide a high school ID, birth certificate, or Social Security card, or a parent or adult guardian must sign them in and verify age. Valid ID for adults means a driver's license, state or county ID, valid gaming or hotel license, or a valid driver's permit.
Harborfields youth visits run Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Thursday 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All Harborfields visitors must be on the resident's approved list, have photo ID, and be 18 or older unless they are a sibling or child of the resident. Anyone under 18 must have an adult and written parental consent.
Mail Rules for Atlantic County Inmates
Mail to the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility requires a specific format to be delivered. The inmate's county ID number and housing location must be included. Use the address block below. Packages are not accepted at all, so do not ship boxes or padded envelopes.
Mail Format:
Atlantic County Justice Facility
[Inmate Full Name]
Include ID# and Housing Location
5060 Atlantic Ave.
Mays Landing, NJ 08330
Books are the only item that may be sent separately from standard mail, and they must come through the New Jersey Corrections Book Store. Friends and family set up an account at www.njcorrectionsbookstore.com, deposit funds, and order from the approved catalog. No hardcover books are allowed. A two-book possession limit applies; an inmate can exchange a finished book for a new one. Books go through the normal mail process once shipped from the book store.
Letters are the safest form of contact by mail. The facility processes mail under standard procedures. Staff and counselors do not deliver personal calls, special visits, or personal literature from family. If you want to reach someone beyond sending a letter, use the phone account system.
Inmate Funds and Commissary
The Atlantic County Justice Facility tracks all inmate funds in a dedicated account. Every deposit triggers a receipt to the inmate. The method used to send money depends on whether you are doing it in person or by mail. Personal checks are not accepted under any circumstances.
| Method | Rule |
|---|---|
| In person | Cash only. |
| By mail | Money orders and certified checks accepted. Include the inmate's full name and county ID number. Personal checks not accepted. |
| Online telephone/commissary account | Available through the facility's online account system; ConnectNetwork handles phone accounts. |
| ConnectNetwork phone support | 800-483-8314, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EST; 24-hour online access also available. |
A user fee of $50 per month, or any portion of a month, is charged to inmates who have been at the facility for more than 15 days. State inmates housed at the facility are exempt from this fee. An inmate cannot make a commissary purchase unless the account balance is at least $50. Account funds can also be applied toward penalties, fines, or bail. Medical and dental co-pays are assessed for services and medications and draw from the same account.
Note: All inmate funds information comes from the Administration page at the Division of Adult Detention; confirm current rules with the facility before sending money, as policies can change.
Atlantic County Jail Inmate Services
The facility offers a range of programs and services beyond basic housing. These affect inmate welfare and, in some cases, release timing or transition planning. Knowing what is available matters for families who are supporting someone through the process.
- Education and vocational: Adult Basic Education, pre-GED, GED, job readiness, parenting, life skills, basic culinary and other trades, New Jersey Department of Labor job workshops, and job placement help.
- Medical and behavioral health: Medical, dental, mental health counseling, and substance and alcohol abuse counseling and treatment. Counselors cannot share specific medical, psychiatric, or substance-abuse information without a signed inmate release.
- Religious programming: A chaplain manages religious services and coordinates volunteer programming.
- Library services: Available to inmates as part of standard programming.
- Discharge planning: Clinicians assess county-sentenced inmates approximately 10 days before release and connect them with housing, food assistance, General Assistance, TANF, employment, mental health, HIV testing, child support, AA, NA, and private or nonprofit providers. This program began February 22, 2005.
The Inmate Services page lists social services that respond to legal and social needs during confinement, but counselors do not arrange special visits or personal calls from family as part of social-service intake. Those requests go through the normal visitation and phone system.
For broader context on the population inside the facility, see the Atlantic County inmate population page, which covers capacity figures, pretrial versus sentenced population, and state and national context.
What to Do When a Search Returns Nothing
A search that returns no result does not mean the person is not in custody. Several things can cause an empty result. The person may be held in county jail where no online roster exists. The person may have been transferred from county to state custody, or from state to federal. The spelling or alias used in a search may not match the booking name. The person may have been released very recently. NJDOC removes records one year after release. VINELink coverage depends on whether the holding agency is a participating site. None of these systems is a legal certificate of release.
Important: For any custody question that affects legal decisions, bail, child custody, or personal safety, confirm directly with the facility or agency that holds the record. Do not rely on an online search result alone.
The four common mistakes for Atlantic County custody searches are: searching NJDOC for someone still in county jail, searching the county for someone already transferred to state prison, searching NJDOC for someone who was released more than a year ago, and calling the wrong jail line. The Jail Records line at 609-909-7551 and the facility main line at 609-645-5855 are both staffed for custody questions. Use the Jail Records line first.
State and Federal Inmate Lookups
When a person has been sentenced and transferred out of Atlantic County into New Jersey state prison, the NJDOC Incarcerated Person Search becomes the correct tool. The search covers current and recently released state inmates and returns the fields described in the table earlier. The NJ State Parole Board also has an offender search page that links to NJDOC, parole records, an OPRA request form for parole records, and the sex offender registry.
Federal inmates held in Bureau of Prisons custody are found through the BOP Inmate Locator. That tool searches by register number, DCDC number, FBI number, INS number, or by name. For Atlantic County cases that went federal, the Camden vicinage of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey handles the prosecution, and the U.S. Attorney's Camden Branch Office covers Atlantic County federal criminal matters. BOP custody is entirely separate from NJ state and county systems.
For people already released, see the released inmates page, which covers VINELink registration in more detail, the sex offender registry, parole and probation contacts, and reentry resources available after release from Atlantic County custody. The underlying criminal case records are covered on the arrest records page.
