Find Recently Released Atlantic County Inmates

Atlantic County does not publish an official released inmates list, so people who need to track a recent release must use a set of separate tools depending on where the person was held. County jail releases are confirmed by phone. State releases go through the New Jersey Department of Corrections search. Federal releases run through the Bureau of Prisons locator. Anyone searching for recently released Atlantic County inmates can also set up custody alerts through VINELink, check the State Parole Board offender search, or look up registered sex offenders through the New Jersey Sex Offender Internet Registry. Each tool covers a different custody type, and picking the right one saves time.

How to Find Recently Released Atlantic County Inmates

Atlantic County's adult jail does not have a public online roster, and no official released-inmate list appears on county websites. That means the first step for county jail releases is a direct phone call. The Central Municipal Court page lists a dedicated jail records line at 609-909-7551. The Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility main line is 609-645-5855 and connects to an automated phone system that can confirm visiting schedules and general facility information.

Phone calls are the most reliable route for county-level custody questions. Online tools work well for state and federal custody but should not be used as the only check when the person may have been held at the local jail in Mays Landing. Bond is accepted at the facility 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, so a person can be released outside normal business hours. Any online result you find may lag behind an actual release by hours or even a full day.

The custody type determines which tool to use. County jail detainees and county-sentenced inmates route to the phone. People transferred to New Jersey state prison route to the NJDOC Incarcerated Person Search. Federal defendants route to the BOP Inmate Locator. People under State Parole Board supervision have a separate search. These are four different systems, and none of them fully replaces calling the jail when county custody is the question.

Note: Pretrial detainees, county-sentenced inmates, and state inmates under contract are all held at the Justice Facility, so the custody category is not always obvious from the outside.

County Jail Records Phone Numbers

Two phone numbers cover most Atlantic County jail inquiries. The jail records line handles custody and inmate-status questions. The Justice Facility main line connects to an automated system that covers visiting schedules, general information, and staff routing. Both lines serve the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility at 5060 Atlantic Avenue, Mays Landing, NJ 08330.

When you call, have the person's full legal name and, if known, their county ID number. Mail to inmates must include the ID number and housing location, so that information is also useful when writing. Personal checks are not accepted for inmate funds; only cash in person or money orders and certified checks by mail are accepted. The facility houses pretrial detainees, county-sentenced inmates, and in some cases state-sentenced inmates awaiting transfer, so staff can usually confirm which category applies and whether a release has occurred.

Searching State Released Inmates with NJDOC

The New Jersey Department of Corrections runs the Incarcerated Person Search at https://www20.state.nj.us/DOC_Inmate/inmatesearch. This covers people in state prison, not people held at the Atlantic County Jail on a county charge. If a person was sentenced to a state facility or transferred from Atlantic County to NJDOC custody, this is the correct search. The portal shows current facility, case details, and release date information where available.

One important rule: NJDOC removes an offender from the search page one year after the completion of their custodial term, the expiration of the maximum sentence, or the mandatory parole supervision date. So the absence of a result does not always mean the person was never in state custody. It may mean they completed their term more than a year ago. The NJDOC help page at nj.gov/corrections/pages/helpfulhints.html explains each field and describes how search results are removed over time.

Searching Federal Released Inmates with the BOP Locator

Federal inmates and people released from federal custody are searchable through the Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator at bop.gov/inmateloc. The BOP locator covers people who were in federal custody, including those who have since been released. A result labeled "not in BOP custody" or "released" confirms that the person is no longer in a federal facility. Atlantic County federal cases move through the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey and are typically handled by the Camden federal courthouse. If a person was charged federally and sentenced to a BOP facility, the locator will show their status.

New Jersey State Parole Board

People released from New Jersey state prison to parole supervision may appear in the State Parole Board offender search. The search page at nj.gov/parole/info-for-offenders/offender-search/ links the NJDOC search, parole records, an OPRA form for administrative parole records, and the sex offender registry. Atlantic County residents released from state custody to a Mays Landing or Atlantic City address would typically report to a parole officer in New Jersey's Atlantic Region supervision area. The Parole Board's public information office handles general inquiries about the offender search and supervision by email.

Parole is supervised release from state prison custody before the full sentence is served. Parolees are subject to conditions set by the Parole Board, which can include reporting requirements, residency rules, employment conditions, substance-abuse treatment, and restrictions on contact with victims or co-defendants. A violation can send the person back to custody, so parole status can change. The Parole Board page is the right place to verify current supervision status for Atlantic County residents who were state-prison parolees.

The Sex Offender Registry After Release

New Jersey's Megan's Law requires people convicted of certain sex offenses to register with local law enforcement. After release from jail or prison, a registrant must report to the police department or Sheriff's Office in the municipality where they plan to live. The New Jersey Sex Offender Internet Registry, searchable at njsp.njoag.gov/nj-sex-offender-registry/, is the public-facing tool. Not all registrants appear on the internet registry. Tier classification, which runs from Tier 1 to Tier 3, controls public notification levels. Tier 1 offenders judged to be low risk are generally not listed on the internet registry, while Tier 2 and Tier 3 offenders may be. The statute governing registration is N.J.S.A. 2C:7-1 et seq.

For Atlantic County, a sex offender released from the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility or from state custody to an Atlantic County address must register locally. The registry search allows location-based lookups by county and municipality, which makes it useful for people who want to know about registrants in a specific town like Galloway Township, Egg Harbor Township, or Atlantic City.

Note: A person may be a registered sex offender but not appear in the internet registry if they are classified as Tier 1. Use the registry as one tool, not a complete list of all people required to register in Atlantic County.

Atlantic County Discharge Planning

Atlantic County runs a formal Discharge Planning program for county-sentenced inmates at the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility. The program began on February 22, 2005. Clinicians assigned to the facility assess county-sentenced inmates scheduled for release approximately ten days before their release date. The goal is to close the gap between leaving jail and getting connected to community services before the person walks out the door.

The assessment covers a range of needs. Clinicians help connect releasing inmates to housing, food assistance through SNAP, General Assistance, TANF, employment services, mental health treatment, HIV testing, general physical health care, child support resolution, and Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous programs. Representatives from private and nonprofit agencies come into the facility before the release date to begin applications, schedule follow-up appointments, and put services in place. That way a person leaving Atlantic County Jail has at least some next steps set up before the day they leave.

The program serves county-sentenced inmates, not pretrial detainees or state inmates being held under contract. People in those categories may have separate discharge support through their supervising agency or probation officer. For county-sentenced inmates in Atlantic County, discharge planning is built into the facility's Inmate Services program and is part of what the county's Division of Adult Detention offers alongside education, vocational training, substance-abuse counseling, and religious programming.

Reentry Resources in Atlantic County

People leaving Atlantic County Jail or returning to Atlantic County after state custody have several resources available beyond the jail's own discharge planning program. Some are county-based, some are run by state agencies, and some serve the broader South Jersey region. Legal aid can help with record-clearing, housing barriers, and public-benefits questions. The Office of the Public Defender may also assist with expungement through the statewide Expungement Unit launched in 2024.

  • South Jersey Legal Services - provides civil legal help in Atlantic County, including housing, benefits, and other matters that affect people returning from incarceration. Phone: 609-348-4200.
  • NJ Office of the Public Defender, Atlantic Region - 5914 Main Street, Suite 201, Mays Landing, NJ 08330, phone 609-625-9111; handles indigent criminal defense and the statewide Expungement Unit for eligible applicants.
  • Legal Services of New Jersey - statewide civil legal aid; see lsnj.org for eligibility and application.
  • NJ Department of Labor workforce services - job readiness and placement programs referenced in the jail's education offerings; reentry workers can connect through One-Stop Career Centers in the region.
  • Atlantic County Bar Association - attorney referral service, phone 609-344-3444, for people who need private counsel for reentry-related legal matters.

Expungement is often the most important legal step for reentry. New Jersey's expungement law, N.J.S.A. 2C:52-1 et seq., allows eligible people to have qualifying criminal records isolated from public view, which can remove barriers to employment, housing, and education. The NJOPD Expungement Unit reported processing more than 4,500 applications after launching in 2024. Clean Slate and marijuana-related reforms may provide broader or automatic relief for some records. People considering expungement should contact the Public Defender or Legal Services to check eligibility before filing.

For current inmate records or general custody questions, the jail lines above are the starting point. For population-level data about the facility, see the Atlantic County inmate population page.

Voting Rights After Release

New Jersey restored voting rights to people on probation and parole effective March 17, 2020. Under that change, a person loses the right to vote in New Jersey only while they are incarcerated for a criminal conviction. Pretrial detainees who have not been convicted retain their voting rights. People serving non-incarceration supervision, such as probation or parole, may vote if they are otherwise eligible under state law.

This is a meaningful change for Atlantic County residents returning from state or local custody. A person released from the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility after serving a county sentence, or released from state prison to Atlantic County, may be eligible to register or re-register to vote right away. The county seat is Mays Landing, and Atlantic County elections are administered through the County Clerk's office and the County Board of Elections. People with questions about their specific eligibility should confirm with the New Jersey Division of Elections before registering. The 2020 change was significant, but the exact details of eligibility can depend on the person's conviction status, whether the sentence is fully complete, and other factors the Division of Elections can clarify.

Active warrants or unresolved criminal matters do not automatically bar someone from voting in New Jersey under the current rules, but a person who is currently incarcerated for a conviction cannot vote during that period of incarceration. For warrant questions, see the Atlantic County warrant records page. For criminal records and background check considerations, see the arrest records page.
